Alaska Airlines has recently rolled out a promotion for its Mileage Plan, allowing members to purchase and gift miles with specific terms and conditions.

Timeframe and Transaction Details

The offer is time-bound, with transactions required to be completed between 6:00 AM PT on November 13, 2023, and 11:59 PM PT on December 23, 2023. To be eligible for any bonus miles, members must adhere to this timeframe.

Cost and Purchase Limits

During this tiered promotional event, selected members of the Alaska Mileage Plan have the opportunity to purchase Alaska miles at varying rates based on the quantity:

  • 1,000 to 2,000 miles, there is no bonus, costing 2.96 cents per mile.
  • between 3,000 and 14,000 miles includes a 30% bonus, reducing the cost to 2.27 cents per mile.
  • 15,000 to 24,000 miles, members receive a 40% bonus, bringing the price down to 2.11 cents per mile.
  • For larger purchases of 25,000 to 100,000 miles, a 50% bonus is offered, lowering the rate to 1.97 cents per mile.

Additional taxes apply for Canadian residents, including GST/HST and QST for those in Quebec.

Purchases can be made in increments:

  • 1,000 miles up to 60,000 miles per transaction
  • 5,000-mile increments up to a maximum of 100,000 miles per transaction.

Restrictions and Limitations

Purchased miles are non-refundable and do not contribute towards achieving MVP and MVP/Gold status tiers.

For Elite Members of the Mileage Plan (MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K, and MVP Gold 100K), there is no annual limit on the number of miles that can be purchased or gifted through Points.com.

Non-Elite Members are capped at a maximum of 150,000 miles acquired through Points.com in a calendar year, whether purchased or gifted. It’s important to note that bonus miles are excluded from this 150,000 miles cap.

Evaluation of the Offer

The offer may not be particularly attractive for those simply looking to buy miles, as Alaska Airlines typically provides a higher bonus, around 60%, on mile purchases. The deal could be beneficial for members who need to top up their miles for a specific redemption or for exchanging miles with partner airlines.

Conclusion

While the offer presents an opportunity to acquire additional miles, its appeal largely depends on individual circumstances and the specific redemption goals of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members.
