If you want to learn what IHG Silver status is, how to earn it, and how to make the most of it — without wasting nights or risking your points — this review will come in handy!

Let’s get started.

What is IHG One Rewards Silver Elite and What Are the Eligibility Requirements?

IHG One Rewards Silver Elite is the first step up from the base (Club) level in IHG’s loyalty program. You earn it by either:

RequirementHow to SatisfyWhen Status StartsWhen Status Ends
10 qualifying nights (calendar year)Book 10 nights at IHG hotels via eligible ratesImmediately upon posting of 10th nightDecember 31 of the next calendar year
Hold IHG Traveler Credit CardApply, get approved & link to IHG accountWithin ~72 hours of card approval (often instantly)As long as card remains open

What is a “qualifying night”? Only paid nights booked directly through IHG count (IHG.com website or app), via the IHG call center, or at a hotel front desk (and with eligible rates).

How Long Does Silver Status Last?

Once you earn it, Silver remains active through the end of the next calendar year. For example, if you hit your 10th qualifying night in June 2026, you’ll keep Silver Elite through December 31, 2027. The same goes for the credit card path: get the card in October 2026, and you’ll have Silver until the end of 2027 (or as long as you hold the card).

Rollover nights: Unlike Gold Elite and higher tiers, Silver Elite does not get any rollover night benefit. In other words, if you stay more than 10 nights in an early part of the year, you don’t carry those extra nights into next year unless you upgrade to Gold or above.

What About Status Matches or Other Shortcuts?

There have been occasional IHG promotions or fast-track challenges, but those are typically targeted at higher tiers (Gold or Platinum) and not Silver.

Silver Elite vs. Club Level: What’s the Real Difference?

Here’s where a lot of people get frustrated. The jump from Club (base) to Silver is not massive — but there are a couple of key perks.

BenefitClub (Base)Silver Elite
20% Bonus Points on Paid Stays✔︎
Points Never Expire*✔︎
2:00 PM Late Checkout**✔︎✔︎
Access to Member Rates & Promotions✔︎✔︎

* Points never expire while Silver is active (lose Silver and points expire after 12 months of no activity).
** Late checkout up to 2pm is subject to availability for all members, not just Silver.

In plain terms, the only things you get with Silver that you don’t have at Club are:

  • 20% bonus on base points. You earn 20% more points on the base earning rate for paid hotel stays (i.e. if you normally get 10 points per dollar, Silver gets 12 points per dollar on those same stays).
  • Points protection. Your points balance won’t expire as long as you maintain Silver status. If you drop to Club and then sit idle for 12 months, your points can vanish.
  • All other “benefits” like member rates, promos, or basic late checkout are already available at the Club level.

Late checkout deserves special mention: many people assume only elites get it, but it’s available to everyone as a courtesy. As IHG’s official tier chart and travel guides like Prince of Travel explain, any member can request a check-out as late as 2pm (pending room availability) — so this is not a Silver-exclusive perk.

Let’s dig into what Silver Elite really delivers, beyond the marketing blurbs.

20% Bonus Points on Eligible Stays

Every time you book a paid stay at an IHG hotel (at a qualifying rate), you’ll earn 20% more in base points. Since IHG normally awards 10 points per $1 spent at most brands, Silver Elite effectively earns you 12 points per $1 on those stays.

How it works in practice:

  • Suppose you book a $200 stay at a Holiday Inn (base earn rate 10x). At Club level, that’s 2,000 base points. Silver gets an extra 20%, so you’d earn 2,400 points (an extra 400 points on a $200 spend).
  • Note brand quirks: Some IHG brands earn fewer base points (e.g. Candlewood/Staybridge earn 5 per $1, so Silver would be 6 per $1 there) [IHG One Rewards Elite Tier Benefits].

Exceptions:

This 20% bonus only applies to the base points from paid stays. It doesn’t multiply:

Only the standard earning portion of a paid stay gets the boost. IHG’s terms and reward guides make clear which points are eligible for elite bonuses — bonus points from promotions are not doubled.

Value Estimate:

If you value IHG points at roughly $0.007 each, a $200 stay that earns 2,400 points is worth about $16.80 in points, compared to $14 at Club level. That’s a ~$2.80 bump in value — modest, but not nothing if you stay often.

Points Never Expire

Simply: so long as you keep your Silver status active, your IHG points balance will not expire due to inactivity.

If you drop to Club level, IHG’s rules say your points will expire after 12 months of no qualifying activity (no stays, no redemptions, etc.). This can be brutal for infrequent travelers who might lose points sitting in their account. With Silver, that 12-month countdown is effectively frozen.

2:00 PM Late Checkout

You can request to check out as late as 2:00 PM (instead of the usual noon) at most IHG hotels.

This is not exclusive to Silver. IHG’s published tier benefits (and travel bloggers like Prince of Travel) confirm that any IHG member, at any tier, can ask for a late checkout up to 2 PM. Approval is always at the hotel’s discretion — staff will often grant it if the hotel isn’t fully booked. So while you should certainly ask (being polite helps!), don’t assume Silver magically guarantees it. In practice, late checkout is a nice-to-have, but not something to bank on for planning a check-out.

Access to Member Rates & Promotions

As an IHG rewards member, you get access to members-only rates when booking on IHG.com or the app, plus periodic special offers (bonus points promotions, discounted points awards, etc.).

Again, this is a benefit for all members, not just Silver. It’s always worth logging in to your IHG account before booking to unlock these member rates. But you get those discounts whether you’re Club, Silver, or any tier — so this isn’t something that sets Silver apart.

Scenario Example: You book a $150 stay at a Crowne Plaza on an IHG member rate. After you leave, you see 1,800 points in your account (1,500 base + 300 Silver bonus). Everything went smoothly: you stayed, your number was saved, and you got the 20% bump automatically. No extra signup steps needed — just checking that 20% came through.

Is IHG Silver Status Worth It?

Here’s a quick decision flow:

  • If you rarely stay at hotels but have points in your account, the easiest way to make sure they don’t expire is to get the IHG Traveler card. It’s a low-effort way to hold Silver (and thus keep points active).
  • If you already rack up 10+ nights per year at IHG brands, you’ll naturally earn Silver anyway — so you might as well take advantage of the bonus points and point protection.
  • If you travel a lot and want room upgrades, lounge access, or free breakfast, Silver alone won’t cut it. You’d need Gold Elite or higher, which requires 20+ nights (or 40+ for Platinum, etc.), or a higher-level credit card offer.
  • If you only stay 1–3 nights at IHG hotels per year and don’t really care about points, Silver likely isn’t worth the effort or expense. Club membership (free) is enough.

Not worth it: If you’re only going to stay a couple nights and you don’t have many points to protect, Silver won’t significantly improve your stays or your rewards. Focus on using or earning points in other ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get Silver status by earning points instead of nights?

No. Silver Elite is only awarded based on nights stayed (10 per year) or via the credit card. You cannot earn Silver by accumulating a certain number of points; that is a path only available to Gold tier and above in IHG’s program.

Does the 20% bonus apply to award (free night) stays?

No. The 20% bonus only applies to base points from paid stays. You don’t earn points (base or bonus) on nights you redeem with points.

How soon after getting the Traveler card will Silver status appear?

Typically within a few days. Many members see Silver quite quickly (sometimes instantly), but allow up to 72 hours. You’ll need to ensure your new card is linked to your IHG account. If it doesn’t post, you may have to contact IHG and show proof of the card.

If I lose Silver, do my points expire immediately?

No, not right away. You’ll drop to Club level, and then IHG’s normal 12-month inactivity rule kicks in. So you have up to 12 more months (with no activity) before your points expire. Any earning or redeeming resets the clock.

The Bottom Line

IHG Silver Elite status is a modest but useful step up from base membership — especially if you care about points more than fancy perks. The real benefits are a 20% boost on base points for your stays and protection against point expiration. The easiest way to get it is with the no-fee IHG Traveler card; otherwise, you’ll need to book and complete 10 eligible nights (making sure they’re direct bookings). Don’t expect free breakfast or guaranteed upgrades at Silver — those are for higher tiers — but do enjoy earning extra points and keeping your balance safe.

Happy travels, and may your nights always be recognized!
