Earning elite status in IHG One Rewards isn’t based on just one metric. Instead, members can qualify in two different ways: by earning IHG Elite Night Credits (Elite Qualifying Nights, EQN) or by accumulating Elite Qualifying Points (EQP). Reaching either requirement can earn you Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Elite status.
While the concept sounds simple, the terminology often causes confusion. Which hotel stays earn Elite Night Credits? Do promotional bonus points count toward Elite Qualifying Points? What about the extra points you receive from elite status, an IHG credit card, or a Bonus Points Package? Since not every point or credit moves you closer to elite status, it’s easy to focus on the wrong metric and slow your progress.
In this guide, we’ll explain the difference between IHG Elite Night Credits, Elite Qualifying Points, bonus points, and credit card-earned rewards, so you’ll know exactly what counts toward elite status, how each metric is earned, and which strategy makes the most sense for your travel habits.
What Are IHG Elite Night Credits?
IHG Elite Night Credits (officially called Elite Qualifying Nights or EQN) are simply the number of qualifying nights you’ve stayed at participating IHG hotels during a calendar year.
Elite nights are one of two ways to qualify for elite status.
Current night requirements are:
| Elite Status | Elite Night Credits Required |
|---|---|
| Silver Elite | 10 nights |
| Gold Elite | 20 nights |
| Platinum Elite | 40 nights |
| Diamond Elite | 70 nights |
You only need to meet either the night requirement or the qualifying point requirement — not both.
What Counts as an Elite Night Credit?
Not every hotel night qualifies.
Generally, elite night credits are earned when you:
- Stay on an eligible paid rate booked through IHG or an authorized booking channel.
- Redeem an IHG Reward Night using points.
- Stay on a qualifying award reservation that is eligible under the program rules.
Only one qualifying night per calendar day can be earned, even if you book multiple rooms or hotels on the same night. Elite nights post based on the check-out date, not the check-in date.
What Are Elite Qualifying Points?
Elite Qualifying Points (EQP) are the second way to earn IHG elite status.
Instead of counting nights, IHG tracks eligible points earned during the calendar year.
Current requirements are:
| Elite Status | Elite Qualifying Points |
|---|---|
| Gold Elite | 40,000 |
| Platinum Elite | 60,000 |
| Diamond Elite | 120,000 |
Silver Elite can only be earned through qualifying nights (or eligible credit card benefits where available).
Which Points Count as EQP?
This is where many members get confused.
The following do count toward elite qualification:
- Base points earned from eligible hotel stays.
- Bonus Points Packages purchased with qualifying room rates.
- Qualified spending through IHG Business Rewards.
- Eligible partner activity, including select Hertz rentals, OpenTable reservations, and Viator bookings.
- Spending on certain IHG credit cards issued in the UK and Greater China.
Which Points Do NOT Count?
Many points you earn increase your redeemable balance but do not help you qualify for elite status.
These include:
Elite Tier Bonus Points
Elite members earn extra points based on status:
- Silver: +20%
- Gold: +40%
- Platinum: +60%
- Diamond: +100%
These are excellent for free nights, but they are not Elite Qualifying Points.
Promotional Bonus Points
Points from promotions such as:
- Double Points
- Triple Points
- Bonus Points after two stays
- Seasonal promotions
also do not count toward elite qualification unless the promotion specifically awards Bonus Elite Night Credits or states otherwise.
U.S. IHG Credit Card Spending
This surprises many members.
Regular points earned from purchases on U.S. IHG One Rewards credit cards — including hotel purchases — are non-qualifying points. They can be redeemed for free nights but do not increase your Elite Qualifying Point total.
What About Bonus Elite Night Credits?
Occasionally, IHG offers Bonus Elite Night Credits through promotions or partner offers.
These are different from bonus points.
Bonus Elite Night Credits:
- Count toward elite status.
- May count toward Milestone Rewards if the promotion specifically says they do.
- May also qualify as rollover nights depending on the terms of the offer.
Since these promotions are relatively uncommon, it’s important to read the offer details carefully before assuming extra nights will be credited.
Do Reward Nights Count?
Yes.
One of the best features of IHG One Rewards is that Reward Nights booked entirely with points count as Elite Qualifying Nights. This means award stays help you progress toward status just like eligible paid stays.
However, because no eligible room spend occurs, Reward Nights generally do not earn Elite Qualifying Points.

Elite Nights vs. Elite Points: Which Is Better?
Neither system is inherently better — the right path depends on your travel habits.
If you stay frequently on inexpensive hotel nights, earning status through elite night credits is usually easier. Every qualifying night moves you closer to the next tier regardless of room rate.
On the other hand, travelers who book fewer but more expensive stays may qualify faster through Elite Qualifying Points, since higher eligible spending generates more qualifying points.
For example, someone who spends several nights at luxury InterContinental properties may reach 60,000 qualifying points long before accumulating 40 qualifying nights.
How Milestone Rewards Fit In
IHG’s Milestone Rewards operate differently from elite status.
Milestone Rewards are earned primarily through qualifying nights, not qualifying points. This means a traveler qualifying for Platinum or Diamond solely through Elite Qualifying Points may still have far fewer Milestone Rewards than someone who reached the same status through nights.
If you’re interested in Confirmable Suite Upgrades, Food & Beverage Rewards, or Lounge Membership, you’ll still want to build your Elite Night Credit total.
Common Mistakes Members Make
Many travelers assume every point earned helps them qualify for elite status, but that isn’t the case.
The most common misunderstandings include believing that:
- Elite status bonus points count as Elite Qualifying Points.
- Double or Triple Points promotions accelerate elite qualification.
- U.S. IHG credit card spending earns Elite Qualifying Points.
- All bonus points are treated the same.
- Redeemable points and qualifying points are interchangeable.
Understanding these differences can make planning your strategy much easier.
Final Thoughts
Although the terminology can be confusing, the rules become much clearer once you separate elite night credits from elite qualifying points and redeemable points.
Elite Night Credits measure how often you stay, while Elite Qualifying Points measure eligible spending and a few specific qualifying activities. Promotional bonus points, elite tier bonuses, and most U.S. credit card earnings increase your balance for future award stays but generally do not help you earn status.
Knowing which activities actually move the needle can help you qualify more efficiently, avoid common misconceptions, and make smarter decisions about where to stay and how to earn your next IHG elite tier.
