Many travelers who already have elite status with Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, or another hotel program eventually ask the same question: Does Marriott match status?
Officially, Marriott Bonvoy does not publish a status match program for members of competing hotel loyalty programs. If you visit Marriott’s website, you will not find a page where you can upload proof of Hilton Honors Diamond, World of Hyatt Globalist, or IHG Diamond Elite status and instantly receive equivalent Marriott status.
Marriott occasionally offers targeted status challenges that can provide a much faster route to Gold Elite or Platinum Elite status than earning those levels through normal qualification requirements. These challenges are not guaranteed and may vary over time, but reports indicate they remain available in many cases when requested directly through Marriott Bonvoy customer service (call Marriott Bonvoy
at 800-627-7468).
How does it work?
Instead of receiving elite status outright, members are given a limited period to complete a certain number of paid nights. If they successfully complete the challenge, Marriott grants the corresponding elite status.
Before enrolling, it is wise to have your Marriott Bonvoy account number ready and a realistic plan for completing the required stays. Because challenge terms are not publicly guaranteed, requesting written confirmation of the requirements and dates can help avoid confusion later.
Typical Marriott Bonvoy Challenge Requirements
The most commonly reported offers have been:
| Status Level | Typical Challenge Requirement |
|---|---|
| Gold Elite | 8 paid nights |
| Platinum Elite | 16 paid nights |
Members generally receive the remainder of the current month plus three additional months to complete the required nights. For example, someone enrolling in mid-May would typically have until the end of August to complete the challenge.
Because these are paid-night requirements, Elite Night Credits from credit cards (Chase, Amex) usually do not count toward completing the challenge.

Alternative Ways to Get Marriott Elite Status
Even without a status match, Marriott offers several shortcuts to elite status.
Many Marriott co-branded credit cards provide automatic Silver Elite or Gold Elite status.
| Credit Card | Annual Fee | Automatic Marriott Status | Additional Status Path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott Bonvoy Bold (Chase) | $0 | Silver Elite | None; includes Elite Night Credits |
| Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (Chase) | $95 | Silver Elite | Gold Elite after $35,000 annual spend |
| Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card | $250 | Gold Elite | Earn toward higher status through Elite Night Credits |
| Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card | $650 | Platinum Elite | One of the fastest ways to obtain Marriott Platinum status |
| Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card | $125 | Gold Elite | Includes Elite Night Credits that can help reach Platinum or Titanium faster |
| The Ritz-Carlton Credit Card | $450 (no longer open to new applicants) | Gold Elite | Legacy card available only via product change from Boundless |
Some cards also award Elite Night Credits each year, reducing the number of nights needed to reach higher tiers. In certain countries, cardholders can even earn Gold Elite status after meeting spending requirements.
There is also a long-standing partnership between Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus. Eligible United Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, and Premier 1K members can receive complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status through the RewardsPlus partnership. Marriott Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members receive reciprocal benefits with United as well.
Bottom Line
Does Marriott match status? Not in the traditional sense.
Marriott Bonvoy does not currently offer a public status match program that automatically converts elite status from competing hotel loyalty programs. Instead, Marriott typically offers status challenges that allow eligible members to earn Gold Elite or Platinum Elite status after completing a reduced number of paid nights within a limited time frame.
For travelers who already have upcoming Marriott stays planned, a challenge can be one of the fastest ways to obtain meaningful Marriott Bonvoy elite status without spending an entire year qualifying through the standard requirements.
