These are two different mechanisms, and mixing them up leads to the wrong expectations at the front desk. A Nightly Upgrade Award (NUA) is a certificate you spend and get confirmed before you arrive, specifically for a suite or Premium Room. The complimentary upgrade Platinum Elite members get at check-in is an automatic, no-certificate perk decided on the spot, based on whatever happens to be available that day – and it is not guaranteed to be a suite at all.

What a Nightly Upgrade Award Actually Is

An NUA is one of the choices under the Annual Choice Benefit members unlock at 50 Qualifying Nights (Platinum) or 75 Qualifying Nights (Titanium) – selecting it gets five (5) Nightly Upgrade Awards credited to the account. Per the Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Program Terms and Conditions: “Nightly Upgrade Awards may be redeemed for advance confirmable upgrades for select Premium Rooms or suites on a per room, per night basis, subject to availability.” The key word is advance – unlike the standard elite upgrade, this one gets resolved before you ever walk up to the desk.

How NUA Actually Works, Step by Step

The terms lay out a fairly rigid process:

  • You request it in advance – through Marriott’s website, app, or Member Support, never at the property. In fact, the terms state NUAs “cannot be applied to a reservation once the reservation has been checked-in.”
  • Availability is checked starting 5 days before arrival (3 days for EDITION, The Ritz-Carlton, and St. Regis), and the hotel keeps checking daily.
  • The final answer comes by 2 p.m. local property time, one day before arrival. If nothing is available by then, the NUA is not used and is automatically credited back to your account.
  • You need one NUA per room, per night, for the entire stay – including any night that happens to be “free” on a Stay-for-5-Pay-for-4 award booking. A 5-night stay needs 5 NUAs, not one.
  • They expire on 31 December of the year following the year they were earned, and cannot be extended, transferred, or gifted.

What the Standard Check-In Upgrade Actually Is

This is the automatic elite benefit Platinum members (and above) already have, with no certificate and no advance request required. The terms describe it plainly: “Platinum Elite Members and above receive a complimentary upgrade, subject to availability upon arrival, for the entire length of stay. Complimentary upgrade includes suites, rooms with desirable views, rooms on high floors, corner rooms, rooms with special amenities or rooms on Executive Floors.”

Notice what that sentence actually promises: a suite is one possible outcome, not the target. The front desk agent decides at check-in, from whatever inventory happens to be unsold that day, and a better view or a higher floor satisfies the benefit just as much as a suite does. Gold Elite members get a narrower version of this – “limited to a Member’s personal guestroom” improvements like a view or floor, with suites not part of the Gold-tier language at all.

A Note on the Name: NUA vs. “SNA”

If you’ve been in the points and miles world for a while, you may know this benefit as a “Suite Night Award” or SNA – that’s the name it carried under the pre-2019 Marriott Rewards and SPG programs, and plenty of long-time members and blogs still use it out of habit. The current Marriott Bonvoy Program Rules only use “Nightly Upgrade Award” – the term does not appear as “Suite Night Award” anywhere in the current terms. Same benefit, same mechanics; just don’t be thrown off if a hotel agent or an older article calls it SNA. See Marriott Suite Night Awards: What’s New in 2024? for more on how the community still discusses this benefit under its older name.

NUA vs. Standard Check-In Upgrade, Side by Side

Which One Actually Gets You a Suite?

If a suite is the actual goal – not just “something better than what I booked” – the NUA is the more reliable tool, precisely because it targets suites and Premium Rooms by design and gets locked in the day before you arrive. The standard check-in upgrade can absolutely land you in a suite too, especially at a property with lighter occupancy, but it is a courtesy extended from whatever is unsold that day, not a request aimed at a suite specifically. Relying on the check-in upgrade for a suite means hoping the hotel has one open and chooses to give it to you over other elite guests in the queue that day.

Practical Tips

  • If you have NUAs and actually want a suite for a specific trip, request them as early as your reservation allows rather than waiting – the window only opens 5 days before arrival, and a late request gives the property less time to work with.
  • Do not let NUAs sit unused – they expire at the end of the year following the one they were earned in, and once expired they cannot be reinstated.
  • On a longer trip, remember you need enough NUAs to cover every single night – if you are short, consider splitting the trip into back-to-back reservations so a fresh NUA request can apply to each one.
  • If your NUA request comes back unconfirmed, you still have the standard check-in upgrade as a fallback if you hold Platinum status or above – the two benefits are not mutually exclusive.
  • Check your specific brand: NUAs are not redeemable everywhere, including All-Inclusive Resorts, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and several other categories listed in the Program Rules, so confirm your property participates before counting on it.

The Bottom Line

An NUA is a certificate you spend to lock in a suite or Premium Room the day before you arrive; the complimentary upgrade Platinum Elite members already get is a same-day courtesy that might land you in a suite but was never designed to guarantee one. If getting a suite on a specific trip actually matters, request the NUA – do not leave it to whatever the front desk decides to hand out at check-in. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Nightly Upgrade Award the same as the standard Platinum check-in upgrade?

No. An NUA is a certificate requested in advance and confirmed up to a day before arrival, targeting suites or Premium Rooms specifically. The standard check-in upgrade is automatic for Platinum Elite and above, decided the day of arrival, and is not guaranteed to be a suite.

Can I request a Nightly Upgrade Award at the front desk during check-in?

No. NUAs must be requested in advance through Marriott's website, app, or Member Support. Marriott's terms explicitly state they cannot be applied to a reservation once it has been checked in.

Is “Suite Night Award” the same thing as a Nightly Upgrade Award?

Yes, functionally. "Suite Night Award" (SNA) was the name used under the pre-2019 Marriott Rewards and SPG programs. Marriott's current Program Rules only use the term "Nightly Upgrade Award," though many members still use SNA out of habit.

How many Nightly Upgrade Awards do I need for a multi-night stay?

One NUA per room, per night, for every night of the reservation - including any night designated as free on an award booking. A 5-night stay requires 5 NUAs, not one.

What happens if my Nightly Upgrade Award request is not confirmed?

If a suite or Premium Room cannot be confirmed by 2 p.m. local property time the day before arrival, the NUA is not used and is credited back to your account automatically, as long as it has not expired.
