Delta’s TakeOff 15 benefit is still one of the most practical reasons to carry an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card. It gives cardmembers a 15% discount on the mileage cost of Award Travel on Delta-operated flights when booking through delta.com or the Fly Delta app. The savings apply automatically when the itinerary qualifies, but they do not apply to partner-operated flights or to taxes and fees.
That makes this a much better long-term story than the older promo-style framing around temporary signup bonuses. Welcome offers change all the time. TakeOff 15 is the more durable benefit, and for many Delta flyers, it can save more value over time than a one-time boost of miles.
TakeOff 15 is a cardmember discount, not a limited-time sale. Delta’s official TakeOff 15 page says eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express cardmembers save 15% when booking Award Travel with miles on Delta flights through Delta’s website or app. Delta also says the benefit works anytime, not just on special award-sale dates.
The most important limitation is that the discount applies only to the mileage portion of the ticket. It does not reduce taxes and fees, and it does not apply to flights operated by Delta partners. So if you are redeeming SkyMiles for Air France, KLM, or another partner, you should not expect TakeOff 15 to show up.
Which Delta Amex Cards Get TakeOff 15
Delta’s official TakeOff 15 page currently lists these eligible cards:
Delta SkyMiles Blue American Express Card is not on Delta’s official eligible-card list for TakeOff 15.
How to Use TakeOff 15
The booking process is straightforward. Delta says you should log in to your SkyMiles account, select Shop with Miles when searching for Award Travel on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app, and then choose an eligible Delta-operated itinerary. At checkout, the TakeOff 15 mileage discount is applied automatically if the reservation qualifies. Delta also suggests using your eligible Delta Amex card to pay the taxes and fees on the booking.
If you are applying for a new eligible Delta Amex card, Delta says you can apply during the booking flow or through the regular card pages. Upon approval, the TakeOff 15 benefit applies automatically at checkout for qualifying Award Travel when using the new card for applicable taxes and fees.

Delta’s own example shows a round-trip beach getaway dropping from 33,000 miles to 28,000 miles, saving 5,000 miles through TakeOff 15. That is not a life-changing number on one trip, but it adds up quickly for people who book several Delta award tickets a year.
This is also why the benefit can be more useful than it first sounds. A 15% discount is not flashy in the way a six-figure signup bonus is flashy, but it can reduce the cost of every qualifying Delta award you book as long as you keep the card.
Can You Use TakeOff 15 on Changes and Cancellations?
Yes, Delta says the TakeOff 15 savings can also apply when changing an eligible Award Travel ticket through delta.com or the Fly Delta app, as long as the new itinerary qualifies.
For cancellations, Delta’s award-deals page states that if an Award Ticket booked with TakeOff 15 is voluntarily canceled, the redeemed miles will be redeposited to the cardmember’s SkyMiles account, except for Basic Economy tickets. Delta says current Award Ticket redeposit fees apply, and for Basic Economy cancellations, the applicable cancellation charge in miles is deducted before the remaining miles are redeposited.
Why TakeOff 15 Matters More Than It Used To
Delta’s co-branded cards now compete on more than just free checked bags and priority boarding. The current personal and business card pages highlight TakeOff 15 alongside benefits like Delta Stays credits, MQD Headstart or MQD Boost on higher-tier cards, companion certificates on Platinum and Reserve, and lounge access on Reserve. That means TakeOff 15 is now part of a broader value package rather than a side perk.
But TakeOff 15 is still one of the easiest benefits to understand. If you already redeem SkyMiles for Delta-operated flights, the discount directly lowers the number of miles you need.
What the Benefit Does Not Cover
This is where people still get tripped up.
TakeOff 15 does not apply to:
partner-operated award flights
taxes and fees
Delta SkyMiles Blue cardholders
additional cardmembers, since Delta’s terms specifically say the eligible benefit is for the basic eligible cardmember account.
That means the old article’s wording should be corrected in two places: Blue cardholders are not on the current eligible list, and the discount is not a universal discount on all awards bookable with SkyMiles.
Final Thoughts
Delta TakeOff 15 is still one of the best ongoing reasons to hold an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card. It gives Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cardmembers on both the personal and business side a straightforward 15% discount on Delta-operated award flights, and that discount now also works when making eligible award changes.
The old promo-focused version of this story is no longer the right angle. The better takeaway today is simpler: if you regularly redeem SkyMiles for Delta flights, TakeOff 15 is one of the most practical recurring airline-card benefits on the market. It will not help with partner awards, and it will not erase taxes and fees, but it can make your SkyMiles balance go noticeably farther over time.
