Want to fly on a specific day but still have the option to change your departure time? Alaska Airlines same-day flight change option is a lifesaver. The play is simple: book any Alaska flight (using miles or cash) for the date you want. Then, when the 24-hour check-in window opens, change to the flight you were hoping for using the same-day confirmed change (SDC). You’ll pay a fixed SDC fee (elites often pay nothing, and some cards waive it too). The cool thing is, you don’t pay the difference in fare or miles. You keep your original price and just change the time.

This is super useful for award tickets. Lock in your date first, then find the perfect flight as seats become available closer to departure.

Let’s get into the specifics.

What It Costs (and When It’s Free)

Current fee landscape

Same-day change (SDC): costs  $50 for short flights and $75 on most others; Saver may pay an additional ~$40 (until May 25, 2025, it cost $25 on several domestic/shuttle routes and $50 elsewhere). You can check the price in the app when you change your ticket — it is official for your ticket/date.

Standby: Free to list on Alaska’s limited standby corridors (space-available).

Who Doesn’t Pay the SDC Fee?

  • Alaska elites: MVP Gold / Gold 75K / 100K members (now Atmos Platinum/Titanium) as well as American AAdvantage ConciergeKey, AA Executive Platinum, and AA Platinum Pro members typically have the same-day confirmed fee waived;
  • Alaska Airlines Atmos Summit Visa Infinite cardholders: the card waives the SDC fee (up to the published cap) as a benefit (Alaska markets “save up to $50” in its card launch brief).
  • Some fully refundable/Main Cabin Flex & First fares may also be exempt. Confirm in the app before you pay.

How to Make a Same-Day Confirmed Change (Step-by-Step)

  1. When check-in opens (24 hours out), go to Manage trip in the Alaska app/website. Look for “Change flight” or the same-day options during check-in.
  2. Choose an earlier or later Alaska-operated flight that same day. The app will show whether SDC is available and the exact fee (or a $0 waiver if you qualify).
  3. No fare difference; just the flat SDC fee if applicable. You’ll get a new boarding pass instantly.
  4. Your upgrade request/seating may re-queue on the new flight according to Alaska’s upgrade priority rules; confirm your seat and re-add upgrade requests as needed.

How Standby Works (and Baggage Tips)

  • List in-app (where enabled) or with an agent at the airport for the eligible earlier nonstop; you’ll keep your original seat until you clear.
  • Checked bags can complicate things. Agents can tag bags to your standby flight but won’t load them until you’re assigned a seat; there’s a (small) risk you and your bag take different flights. If timing is tight, carry-on only is your safest play.

When a Segment Is Operated by American Airlines (AA)

Same-day confirmed changes (SDC) and Alaska standby apply only to flights operated by Alaska. If any segment is operated by AA, you must follow AA’s same-day rules for that segment.

You can make an Alaska SDC on an AS segment and an AA SDC/standby on an AA ticket independently of each other, but through checked baggage and missed connection protection do not apply. Allow plenty of time or travel with carry-on baggage only.

To change an AA-operated leg, use the AA app/site (Same-day Change/Standby options will show with the fee or waiver), or visit an AA counter/gate if the record needs reissue.

AA typically allows you to wait for earlier flights on the same day at no additional charge, subject to availability. You check in on the app or with an agent and check in at the gate if a seat becomes available.

AAdvantage elite tiers often have reduced or waived SDC fees on eligible routes. Cancellations are reflected dynamically in the app/AA account.

Caveats to keep in mind

  • Multi-airline itineraries: Changing an AA segment may break your eligible connection to/from an Alaska segment. Systems often block changes that violate minimum connection times; agents may require you to adjust both segments or keep your original schedule.
  • Calendar day rule: As with Alaska, same-day AA options are only available on the same calendar day. Overnight flights that cross midnight are generally not considered “same day.”
  • Strictness of partner awards: For Alaska-miles awards on AA, most likely that you cannot SDC; you must find partner award space and rebook. This may change the number of miles earned and incur additional fees depending on your timing and status.

F&Q

Can I change airports (e.g., SEA→PAE)

Expect to keep the same origin/destination; airport swaps are generally not eligible for SDC. The app enforces this.

What if I’ve checked a bag?

You can still try — agents will tag the bag to your standby/changed flight, but it adds risk. Carry-on only makes standby simpler.

Will my upgrade follow me?

Your request typically re-queues on the new flight under Alaska’s upgrade priority rules (status, fare class, request time).

What if the app won’t offer SDC?

It means no eligible inventory or your fare.

Bottom Line

It’s a good idea to know about Alaska’s same-day flight tools. They let you grab a date and pick your flight time later, all without changing the ticket price.

If the flight you want is booked, waiting for a seat to open up on direct flights can work. Keep in mind the rules: it has to be the same day, between the same cities, flown by Alaska, and what the app says about your booking.

If you’re thinking about standby, pack light. Also, be ready for your seat and any upgrades to change as you wait for openings on new flights. If American Airlines runs part of your trip, follow their rules. Using same-day changes like this gives you a lot more flexibility, especially with award tickets. It can turn a so-so flight into one you really want with little trouble.
