Air Canada’s Million Mile program is one of the few airline loyalty programs that still rewards lifetime flying activity with permanent elite status. Members who accumulate enough Lifetime Qualifying Miles (LQM) on eligible Air Canada-operated flights can earn Aeroplan Elite Status for life, eliminating the need to requalify every year.

For frequent travelers who spend years flying Air Canada, the program can provide substantial long-term value through lounge access, priority services, complimentary baggage allowances, Star Alliance recognition, eUpgrade credits, and annual Status Qualifying Credit (SQC) deposits.

The challenge is that not every flight counts. Basic Economy fares, award tickets, and partner-operated flights can dramatically slow progress toward the million-mile threshold. Understanding exactly how Lifetime Qualifying Miles are earned is essential for anyone pursuing lifetime status.

This guide explains how the Air Canada Million Mile program works, which flights qualify, what benefits are available at each milestone, and the most effective strategies for reaching lifetime elite status.

Explanation of Lifetime Qualifying Miles (LQM)

Before we get tactical, let’s quickly clarify the two most important terms:

Lifetime Qualifying Miles (LQM) are the miles earned only on paid, eligible Air Canada flights (including Rouge and Express), based on the actual distance flown and your originally ticketed fare class. Notably, Economy (Standard/Flex/Comfort/Latitude) fares earn 100% of miles, Premium Economy 125%, and Business 150%. Basic Economy and award tickets earn 0 LQM, and no LQM are earned on partner or Star Alliance flights.

Starting in 2026, Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) is the new currency for requalifying for Aeroplan elite status annually. Million Mile status guarantees you an annual deposit of SQC (2,500 at 1M, 5,000 at 2M, etc.) by the end of February each year, which can be used to unlock milestone perks.

If you’re new to these terms, don’t worry — we’ll break down how they work in real bookings further on.

What Are the Eligibility Requirements for Air Canada Million Mile Status?

To qualify for Air Canada’s Million Mile program, you must earn at least 1,000,000 Lifetime Qualifying Miles (LQM) on eligible Air Canada-operated flights (including Rouge and Express), booked in Standard or higher fare classes, and credited to your Aeroplan account. Here’s a quick reference summary:

  • Eligible flights: Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Air Canada Express (must be operated by AC/Rouge/Express; codeshares on partners don’t count).
  • Fare classes: Paid fares in Standard, Flex, Comfort, Latitude, Premium Economy, Business, or First. (Basic Economy and award bookings do not earn any LQM.)
  • Booking channel: Direct (Air Canada website, app, call center). Make sure your Aeroplan number is attached at booking to receive LQM.
  • LQM calculation: Based on your original fare class and distance flown. (Economy = 100%, Premium Econ = 125%, Business = 150% of miles). Upgrades after booking do not increase your LQM.
  • Partner/Star flights: Flights on other airlines (even if ticketed by AC) do not count toward Million Mile status.
  • Unlimited Flight Pass: Monthly payments on AC’s Unlimited Flight Passes (see below) each earn a fixed amount of LQM.
  • Status validity: Lifetime, once you hit the threshold—no annual requalification needed.
  • Annual SQC deposit: 2,500 SQC at 1M, 5,000 at 2M, 10,000 at 3M, etc., deposited in your account by end of February each year.
  • Friend nomination: At each million-mile milestone, you get the right to award status to a friend (see below).

When does status begin and end? Once you hit 1,000,000 LQM, your Aeroplan 50K status is locked in for life — no more annual work to retain it. Higher thresholds (2M, 3M, etc.) automatically bump your lifetime tier (75K, Super Elite, etc.). There’s no “soft landing” or penalty if activity slows down: once earned, those perks are yours forever.

All Ways to Earn Air Canada Million Mile Status

Let’s get specific about how you can actually rack up those elusive LQM:

1. Paid Air Canada Flights (Standard or Higher)

This is the bread and butter of LQM earning. Only paid tickets on Air Canada (including Rouge and Express), booked in Standard or higher fare classes, will count. Basic Economy and award/points bookings earn zero LQM. Likewise, any segment operated by a Star Alliance partner or other airline (even if ticketed by AC) earns no LQM.

You earn LQM equal to the published multiplier for your fare bucket: 100% of distance in Economy (excluding Basic), 125% in Premium Economy, and 150% in Business, based on the original ticketed cabin. Remember, any upgrade after purchase (e.g. using miles or iUpgrade) does not change your LQM; it’s always based on the fare you paid for.

Example: Toronto–Delhi (one-way ≈7,228 miles) booked in business class would earn about 10,842 LQM (≈21,684 LQM round-trip). That’s roughly 2.2% of the way to 1M in just one return trip. Long-haul, premium-cabin flying is the fastest path: every extra 1% multiplier quickly adds up toward that million.

2. Air Canada Unlimited Flight Pass

What is a Flight Pass?

If you’re a true road warrior, Air Canada’s Unlimited Flight Passes can boost your totals. These are multi-month prepaid passes allowing unlimited flights within a region. Each monthly installment of an Unlimited Flight Pass earns a fixed number of LQM. The exact per-month amount depends on which pass you buy (region, fare class, and term) and is specified in AC’s official Flight Pass terms.

Since these accrual rates can change, always verify the current values in the terms before buying.

Unlimited Flight Passes can provide a predictable monthly LQM boost, but the precise credit depends on the specific pass and is subject to change. Always confirm the official accrual rate before purchasing.

Europe (multi-month, Business)Business~10,000 LQM

3. What Does Not Count

  1. Star Alliance/partner flights: These earn zero LQM toward Million Mile, even if ticketed by Air Canada (You will still get normal Aeroplan points from partners, but none of these count as LQM.)
  2. Award/points bookings: Zero LQM—flights paid with Aeroplan points (including Points + Cash) do not count at all.
  3. Upgrades: LQM are based on your original fare class, so upgrading (via points or paid upgrade) after booking has no effect on LQM.
  4. Basic Economy: Basic fares earn no LQM, even if the seat is purchased with cash.
  5. Other partners: Car rentals, credit card spending, hotel stays, car rentals, etc. do not contribute to Million Mile totals. This is purely about “butt-in-seat” flying on Air Canada metal.

Status matches, credit cards, car rentals, and other partner activities do not count toward Million Mile LQM. If you’re aiming for Million Miles, focus only on the listed eligible flights and passes above.

Air Canada Million Mile Program Benefits: What Do You Actually Get?

The real draw of the Million Mile program is the lifetime elite status — but there’s more. Here’s what you unlock at each milestone, and what it means in real life.

Lifetime Aeroplan 50K Status (1,000,000 LQM)

Once you reach 1,000,000 LQM, you’re granted Aeroplan 50K status for life. This is not just a title; it’s a permanent upgrade — no more worrying about annual requalification.

What you get in real life:

  • Maple Leaf Lounge access: Unlimited access for you (the member) to all Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges. You can also bring your spouse/common-law partner and dependent children, plus one guest, at no extra charge. (Certain restrictions apply (e.g. lounge occupancy), but broadly you and your family fly lounge-hopping worldwide.)
  • Star Alliance Gold status: Lifetime Star Gold, which grants lounge and priority benefits on any Star Alliance flight.
  • Priority airport services: Priority check-in, priority security (where available), priority boarding, and priority baggage handling on AC/Star flights.
  • Checked baggage: Three free checked bags (up to 32 kg each) on AC/Star flights.
  • eUpgrade credits: 15 eUpgrade credits per year as part of Core Benefits, letting you upgrade paid Economy flights to Premium Economy/Business (subject to availability).
  • Other perks: These include preferred seats at booking, priority waitlists, etc., layered on top of 50K status perks.

These upgrades can easily save/premium values on thousands of dollars in fees annually. For example, free lounge access alone (for you + family + guest) could easily be worth several hundred dollars per trip if purchased separately, and waiving baggage fees for 3 bags saves ~$100+ per trip compared to a non-tier flyer.

Lifetime Aeroplan 75K Status (2,000,000 LQM)

At 2M LQM, your status permanently jumps from 50K to Aeroplan 75K. You’ll still enjoy 50K perks (plus more), and you also earn more eUpgrades (20 per year) and higher bonus points multipliers.

You can now nominate one friend (final once chosen) to receive lifetime Aeroplan 50K status. This nomination is one-time and cannot be changed.

Lifetime Super Elite Status (3,000,000 LQM)

At 3M LQM, you’re permanently upgraded to Aeroplan Super Elite (equivalent to 125K). This is the airline’s top published tier, with the richest upgrade availability and pro-line priority perks.

Annual SQC Deposits

After 1M, you automatically get 2,500 SQC each January. At each additional million, you get bigger SQC credits and friend-status gifts as above. Aeroplan deposits these rewards (SQC and friend status) by end of February each year.

  • 1M Milestone: 2,500 SQC deposited (for future status/milestone use).
  • 2M Milestone: 5,000 SQC deposited, plus a new Aeroplan 35K status for your friend, and your one-time nomination of a friend for 50K (as above).
  • 3M Milestone: 10,000 SQC deposited, plus Aeroplan 50K annual status for a friend (valid through year-end).
  • 4M Milestone: 20,000 SQC deposited, and your previously nominated friend’s status is upgraded from 50K to 75K.
  • 5M Milestone: 30,000 SQC deposited, plus your nominated friend’s status upgraded to Super Elite (125K).

Friend Status Benefits

A key part of Million Mile is sharing perks with someone else:

  • At 2M: You nominate one person for lifetime Aeroplan 50K status (from that point on). Choose wisely—Air Canada’s terms make this final.
  • At 4M: The same friend is automatically upgraded to lifetime Aeroplan 75K.
  • At 3M (and beyond): Each year you can nominate one person (by Dec 30 of the previous year) to receive annual status (35K or higher, depending on your level that year). If you hit 2M/3M/etc. late in the year, you’d decide on that year’s nomination before December 30. Remember, nominations for lifetime status (the 2M gift) are final by AC policy, and those annual Milestone nominations are final for that year.

Welcome Membership Kit

When you log in to Aeroplan after hitting 1M LQM, Air Canada will eventually send you a welcome package. This includes a special Million Mile membership card and branded luggage tags. It’s a nice bit of ceremony: you may even see cool recognition at airports or in lounges if fellow staff notice your new status (some past members report surprised lounge announcements and gifts, though that may not always happen).

Kit timeline: Air Canada’s site doesn’t specify timing. Anecdotally, members report that the kit generally arrives a few weeks after you cross 1M. For example, some have seen their Aeroplan account update within a week or so, and the physical kit within about 2–6 weeks. If you haven’t seen your status updated or received the kit after ~4–6 weeks, it’s wise to contact Aeroplan support (phone or online) to inquire. Keep your flight confirmations handy as proof of reaching the milestone.

Bottom Line

The Air Canada Million Mile program is one of the most valuable — and challenging — lifetime status programs in global aviation. If you play by the rules, track your progress meticulously, and fly strategically, you’ll lock in elite perks for life and enjoy real, ongoing value on every Air Canada trip. But it pays to be vigilant: not every mile counts, and simple mistakes can set you back for months or years. Plan carefully, double-check bookings, and you can punch your ticket to guaranteed status in the clouds.
