If you’ve ever tried to use a Hyatt Suite Upgrade (SUA) bonus and things didn’t go as planned, you’re not alone. The process can seem opaque, the rules can be confusing, and the benefits — though potentially huge — are easy to miss. In this guide, we’ll explain in detail exactly how Hyatt SUAs work, who is eligible for them, how to actually use them, and how to get the maximum possible benefit.

Let’s dive in and make sure your next Hyatt suite upgrade delivers the luxury experience you’ve earned.
Key Concepts: What Is a Hyatt Suite Upgrade Award (SUA)?
A Hyatt Suite Upgrade Award (often called a “Globalist suite upgrade” or “suite upgrade certificate”) is a benefit of the World of Hyatt loyalty program. It’s a digital certificate that lets you confirm an upgrade to a standard one-bedroom suite (up to 7 consecutive nights in one room) on a qualifying paid or Points+Cash rate at eligible Hyatt resorts and hotels. The keyword is confirmed: you book into the suite at the time of reservation, rather than hoping for a space-available upgrade at check-in.
Why does this matter? Because at many luxury Hyatt properties, the rack rate difference between a standard room and a suite can be hundreds of dollars per night. Using an SUA on a weeklong stay can often save you thousands of dollars. For example, upgrading a one-week stay at a flagship hotel like the Park Hyatt New York (where the suite premium can be ~$700 per night) might save on the order of $4,000–$5,000.

However, not every stay qualifies, and missteps can cost you money or a wasted certificate. The rest of this guide will unpack the details.

Here are the risks you may face when using an SUA:
- If a hotel or agent does not apply the SUA correctly, you may be charged the full price of the suite.
- The SUA certificate has an expiration date. It is not possible to receive, for example, a refund or compensation in points. There is also no provision for extending its validity.
- Some World of Hyatt hotels do not participate in the SUA program at all (Hyatt’s official terms and conditions include a list of specific properties).
- Additionally, SUAs are not valid when using free night certificates (annual certificates, category-based certificates) or under certain contracted corporate rates.
- Each SUA is valid for only one room, for a maximum of 7 nights. Booking multiple rooms or incorrectly allocating nights may result in the loss of additional SUAs.
- Hyatt will not send you a notification when your SUA is about to expire.
I’ll discuss all of this below, so please read to the end.
Eligibility Requirements: Who Can Earn and Use Hyatt SUAs?
Not every World of Hyatt member can earn or use Suite Upgrade Awards. Check this quick-reference summary to see if you qualify:
| Path to SUA | Requirement | SUAs Earned | Transferable? | When Issued | Expiration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Globalist Status | 60 qualifying nights or 100,000 base points/year | 4 per year | No | Upon requalification | 1 year from issue (per Hyatt) |
| Milestone Rewards | 40, 50, 60, 70–150 nights (various thresholds) | 1–2 per milestone (up to 14) | Yes | At each earned milestone | 1 year from issue (per Hyatt) |
| Lifetime Globalist | Lifetime Globalist member | 4 per year | No | Annually (in credit card anniversary month) | 1 year from issue |
How to get Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards
Below, we’ll list the ways to earn Suite Upgrade Awards once again:
- Globalist members (60 nights or 100k points in a calendar year) get 4 SUAs automatically upon qualification.
- Milestone Rewards now let members select or auto-earn SUAs at night milestones: at 40 and 50 nights you can choose SUAs (1 and 2 respectively), and at 60 nights you get 2 SUAs plus Globalist status, then 1 SUA at each 10-night increment from 70 up to 150 (for a maximum of 14 SUAs per year).
- Lifetime Globalist members automatically receive 4 SUAs each year (they get them regardless of annual activity).

Example
You’re a Globalist with two unused SUAs. You book a 5-night paid stay at a participating Park Hyatt (through Hyatt’s site). You can apply one SUA to instantly lock in a suite for those 5 nights at the base room rate.
When Do Awards Start and End?
Globalist and Milestone SUAs are issued as soon as you hit the threshold (in your membership year). For instance, if you earn Globalist status on August 1, 2026, your 4 Globalist SUAs will post then, each expiring one year later (Aug 1, 2027). Milestone SUAs work similarly – a SUA earned July 1, 2026 (for example) expires July 1, 2027. There are no extensions, and Hyatt will not give points or refunds for expired SUAs. Use or gift them before the year is up.
Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards: Official Property Exclusion List
Not every Hyatt property accepts Suite Upgrade Awards. Some of the most aspirational or boutique properties are excluded, and these exclusions can change over time.
Where can you find the official list?
Hyatt maintains a current exclusion list in the World of Hyatt program terms. To ensure you don’t attempt to use an SUA at an ineligible property, always check the latest list before booking.
Where Suite Upgrade Awards are NOT accepted (the exceptions)
A) Entire property types / collections where SUAs don’t apply
| Where Suite Upgrade Awards (SUAs) are NOT valid | SUA accepted? | What this means for bookings |
|---|---|---|
| Any property that does not accept rewards for suites | No | If a hotel won’t allow suite redemptions, you can’t apply a Suite Upgrade Award there either. |
| Hyatt Vacation Club properties | No | SUAs can’t be used at Hyatt Vacation Club resorts. |
| Hyatt Vivid | No | SUAs aren’t valid at Hyatt Vivid properties. |
| Inclusive Collection (AMR Legacy Collection) brands | No | SUAs aren’t valid at these brands: Impression by Secrets, Secrets, Dreams, Breathless, Zoëtry, Alua, Sunscape, and other hotels/resorts in the AMR Legacy Collection. |
| Hyatt Ziva & Hyatt Zilara resorts | No | SUAs aren’t valid at Hyatt Ziva or Hyatt Zilara all-inclusive resorts. |
| Chatwal Lodge | No | This specific property is explicitly excluded from SUAs. |
| Residences at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley | No | This specific property is explicitly excluded from SUAs. |
| Any hotel/resort that does not offer “premium suites” (as defined by Hyatt) | No | If Hyatt does not classify the property as offering “premium suites,” SUAs are not valid there — even if the hotel has special/presidential/diplomatic suites. (In practice, this shows up as: no SUA option appears for that hotel.) |
B) Brand-level exclusions (SUAs generally won’t work here)
Hyatt’s own terms are the final authority, but reputable program guides and long-running Hyatt coverage consistently note the following brand-level restriction:
- Hyatt Place — SUAs aren’t usable.
- Caption by Hyatt — commonly cited as excluded for SUAs (often discussed in the context of Hyatt’s upgrade-award limitations).
Important nuance: some travelers report SUAs can work at certain Hyatt House properties, but that’s not the same as “all Hyatt House locations always accept SUAs.” (This is why Hyatt’s booking flow is the best final check.)
C) Individual hotels Hyatt blocks (even though they have suites)
Hyatt also maintains a list of specific properties that are “Suite Upgrade Award ineligible.”

How to confirm
When you search a stay on Hyatt.com/app, if the hotel is eligible and a standard suite is available for your dates, you’ll typically see an option to apply a Suite Upgrade Award during/after booking. If you don’t see that option, assume one of these is true: (1) the hotel is excluded, or (2) no standard suite inventory is available.
If you’re unsure about a property’s eligibility, call the World of Hyatt Global Contact Center at 1-888-344-9288 or check the official Hyatt website before booking.
How to Use Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards (SUA) in Real Bookings

Applying an SUA seems simple in theory, but can trip up even savvy travelers. Here’s a step-by-step approach:
1) Book an Eligible Rate at a Participating Hotel
Log in to your World of Hyatt account on Hyatt.com or call Hyatt directly. You must have SUA in your World of Hyatt account that has not expired. Bookings must be made through direct channels (on the Hyatt website, in the app, or by phone) and under the applicable rate (this can be a paid rate, a points booking, or Points+Cash). Please note that free stay certificates and heavily discounted rates are not eligible for SUA. The reservation must be at a hotel participating in the program (see the section for details). The reservation must be for 1–7 consecutive nights in a single room (multiple rooms or separate accommodations require the use of multiple SUAs).
2) Apply the SUA
During online checkout, there isn’t currently a reliable way to attach an SUA (the option is still inconsistent). The safest method is to call the World of Hyatt Global Contact Center at 1-888-344-9288 (U.S.) or email your Hyatt Concierge.
Tell the agent your confirmation number and that you want to apply a Suite Upgrade Award (specifying which certificate if you have multiple). They will attach it to your reservation.
If you have multiple awards, double-check which one they apply; milestone SUAs are transferable, but your Globalist SUAs aren’t. Keep quiet about whether the reservation is paid vs. award until you tell them how many SUAs to use, to avoid errors.
3) Confirm Your Upgrade Before Arrival
Please note that if you add SUA to reservations at the following hotels: Secrets, Impression by Secrets, Dreams, Zoëtry, Alua, Sunscape, Breathless, and Hyatt Vivid in Europe, confirmation of the reward in the form of a free upgrade to a suite may take up to seventy-two (72) hours.
After the SUA is applied, review your online reservation. It should show the suite room type (such as “Park Suite” or similar) while keeping the original room rate (i.e. the suite should be listed as “upgraded,” not new money).
Also, to make sure everything went as planned, do a final check 48 hours before your arrival. The thing is, hotels have on occasion mistakenly released the suite or charged the suite rate instead of $0 extra. Verify that your reservation still shows the suite and the original rate. If anything looks wrong (e.g., it’s showing the higher suite rack rate), call Hyatt immediately to correct it. Don’t wait until arrival—errors are much harder to fix on short notice.
4) At Check-In: Verify and Escalate if Needed
When you arrive, go to the front desk and confirm that you’ve been booked into the suite. Your pre-checked reservation should show a suite assignment.
Keep an eye on your folio. Ensure you’re only paying the original room rate, with no extra suite premium added. If the desk tries to charge you the suite rate or hasn’t honored the SUA, politely request to speak to a manager or call the Hyatt Contact Center on the spot. Stay firm but courteous — mistakes happen, and Hyatt will typically backtrack if you catch it early.
If things do go wrong: Act fast. Contact Hyatt via phone or email ([email protected]) and have all details ready (membership #, reservation, SUA numbers). Explain that the upgrade benefit was not honored. If needed, politely escalate to a supervisor or the Global Care Center. Keep records of every interaction. Hyatt’s Twitter concierge (@HyattConcierge) can also be a surprisingly effective channel if the regular route drags. Many members have snagged corrections simply by being persistent and prepared.
What to Do If Your SUA Isn’t Honored
If you encounter issues with your SUA not being applied, follow this escalation protocol:
Contact the Hotel Front Desk:
- Politely explain the issue and show your reservation confirmation with the suite upgrade.
- If the front desk cannot resolve, ask to speak to the on-duty manager.
Call the World of Hyatt Global Contact Center:
- U.S. number: 1-888-344-9288
- Provide your membership number, reservation confirmation, and details of the issue.
Email World of Hyatt Support:
- Send a concise email to [email protected] with your reservation details and a brief summary of the problem.
Escalate to Hyatt Global Care (if needed):
- If the issue remains unresolved, request that your case be escalated to the Global Care team.
- You can also reach out via Hyatt’s official Twitter account (@HyattConcierge) for additional support.
Sample Escalation Email Template:

Strategic Advice: How to Maximize Value from Hyatt SUAs
Suite Upgrade Awards should be used where they unlock the most value. Here are some high-level strategies:
- Focus on extended stays at luxury hotels (7 nights if possible): Each SUA can cover up to seven nights, so using them during long trips allows you to maximize your savings. At luxury hotels (Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, Andaz, etc.), the cost of staying in a suite often exceeds the standard rate by hundreds of dollars per night. For example, upgrading to a suite for a week at a top-tier Hyatt hotel can save you thousands of dollars. In contrast, using an SUA for a 1- or 2-night stay—or at a mid-tier Hyatt hotel—may save you only a few dozen dollars per night.
- Prefer Paid or Points+Cash Stays: Avoid using SUA for stays booked with free-night certificates (annual or bonus), as the certificates generally aren’t eligible for this anyway. Also, avoid lower-tier hotels or stays during the off-season when the luxury surcharge is minimal. Use SUAs at upscale resort-style hotels, not during short business trips to the city.
- Watch Expiration Closely: Remember that every SUA expires one year after issuance. Hyatt does not extend expiration dates or compensate for lost awards. Mark the date on your calendar as soon as you receive the SUA. If you don’t use the Milestone SUA by then, give it to a friend or family member who can. (You can freely transfer Milestone SUAs; Globalist SUAs cannot be transferred.)
- Use Pre-Arrival Checks: As we’ve emphasized, always check your reservation 48–72 hours before arrival to ensure the SUA has been applied correctly. If something is wrong, correct it in advance.
- Stack and Compare: If you have multiple SUAs and a long stay, remember that a single SUA covers only 7 nights. Book your stay to take advantage of this (for example, split a 10-day stay into 7 + 3 if you have multiple certificates). Also keep an eye on Hyatt promotions; sometimes a suite upgrade can be combined with periodic promotions, such as bonus point offers.
By following these tips — especially prioritizing length and luxury — you’ll stretch each suite certificate much farther.
Сan You Gift Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards
Yes — you can gift a room upgrade to a Hyatt suite to another World of Hyatt member if you earned it through a Milestone selection. And yes, there is a limit on the number of gifted awards another member can receive in a year (10 awards per calendar year), so gifting too many to a single person may cause them to reach the limit.
The process of transferring (gifting) is quite simple. Log in to your World of Hyatt account, go to the “Rewards” section, select the desired upgrade from your list of suite upgrade rewards, click the three dots next to the reward you want to transfer, and click “Give Reward.” Then enter the last name and World of Hyatt number of the person to whom you want to transfer the upgrade, and it will be instantly credited to their account.
Bottom Line
Hyatt Suite Upgrade Awards can be one of the most lucrative perks in the World of Hyatt program — if you use them wisely. Aim for long, high-end stays, always handle the booking details proactively, and double-check every step. Keep an eye on those expiration dates (set a reminder!). And never hesitate to escalate politely if an upgrade doesn’t stick. With a bit of planning and vigilance, you’ll enjoy the suite life without any nasty surprises.
Safe travels, and enjoy those upgrades!
