Pricing Glitch

IHG changes the price per point depending on how many you purchase. It starts at 1.35 cents per point at gets as low as 1 cent per point when buying 26K points or more. When browsing points purchase options, we discovered a pricing mix-up. Since points up to 25K cost 1.35 cents, it’s cheaper to buy 28,000 points. See the images below for comparison.

Booking award stays with IHG One Rewards credit cards is the best way to maximize the value of points with their 4th Night Free perk. However, a few details are included with the offer to prevent loyalty members from over-purchasing points. Here’s what you need to know:

• Members can purchase a maximum of 250,000 points and get a 250,000 bonus for a total of 500,000 point limit.
• This point purchase offer counts towards your annual limit. Accounts have a limit of buying 250K points per year, including promotion purchases.
• Buying points and the bonus do not count towards the requirements needed to earn IHG One Rewards elite status.
• Offer is ineligible to receive a 20% point purchase discount with IHG® Rewards credit cards.

Final Thoughts

The 100% bonus offer when buying IHG points brings the value per point low enough to see significant benefits when redeeming them for reward travel. For example, buying points for the standard 1.35 cents per point doesn’t make sense when redeeming for the trip ideas mentioned above, with a redeeming value of 0.9-1.2 cents per point. But buying points for 0.5 cents means you can get more than twice their value.
