American began testing two new AAdvantage app features on September 23–24, 2026: an automatic seat-change tool available to all status tiers, and a complimentary Main Cabin food preorder option limited to Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey. Both are showing up in beta app builds first, not a full public rollout yet, but the mechanics are specific enough to walk through now.

Automatic Seat Changes

This one is for any AAdvantage member flying solo. Under Trip options in the app, you set a seat preference — aisle, middle, or window — and can also ask to sit closer to the front or in a bulkhead row. If a matching seat opens up before departure, American moves you automatically, no action required.

The guardrails are straightforward:

  • The change stays inside your ticketed cabin — this won’t bump you from Main Cabin into Main Cabin Extra or First.
  • Exit-row seats aren’t included in automatic reassignment.
  • Requests are prioritized first by AAdvantage status, then by when the request was made.
  • The system stops watching for a seat 24 hours before departure, and stops for you specifically once it successfully moves you or you manually pick a different seat.

One quirk worth knowing: complimentary Main Cabin Extra unlocks for Gold members inside that same 24-hour window before departure. Since the automatic seat-change tool stops watching right at that 24-hour mark, there’s a real chance it won’t catch a Main Cabin Extra seat that opens up specifically because of the Gold unlock — you may still need to check manually close to departure.

American isn’t the first to do this. United rolled out a similar automatic seat-improvement tool back in March 2024, and reported that more than 30% of members who used it were moved to a preferred seat within a few months.

Complimentary Main Cabin Food Preorder

Executive Platinum and ConciergeKey members already get a complimentary food item and an alcoholic beverage when seated in Main Cabin on flights over 1,100 miles — that part isn’t new. What’s new is the ability to preorder that food up to about 20 hours before departure, so it’s actually reserved for you rather than a coin flip.

That fixes a real, if minor, annoyance: American only carries limited quantities of each Main Cabin food option, and top elites seated toward the back of the cabin have long run the risk of the cart selling out before it reaches their row. Preordering removes that risk entirely for the item you choose.

Bottom Line

Both features are currently in testing and appearing in beta app builds first, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see them yet. If you do spot Automatic seat change or a food preorder prompt under Trip options, they’re real and functional — set your seat preference if you’re flying solo, and if you hold Executive Platinum or ConciergeKey, preorder your Main Cabin food rather than leaving it to chance.
