On October 13, 2026, United Airlines announced the biggest structural change to MileagePlus Premier status qualification in years: starting in 2027, Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) are eliminated as a qualification path entirely. Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) become the only metric that counts toward status, and the Premier 1K threshold is rising sharply.
PQF Is Gone — PQP Is the Only Metric
Until now, every Premier tier had two ways in: hit the PQP-only threshold, or combine a lower PQP amount with a minimum number of Premier Qualifying Flights. That combined path disappears completely in 2027. If you’ve been relying on flight segments to make up ground on spending, that strategy no longer works. PQP is now the sole currency of status, for every tier from Silver to 1K. For background on how these two metrics worked before this change, see our guide to PQP and PQF.
2027 Premier Status Requirements
| Tier | 2027 Requirement (PQP only) | What’s Gone |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 6,000 PQP (unchanged) | 15 PQF + 5,000 PQP combined path |
| Gold | 12,000 PQP (unchanged) | 30 PQF + 10,000 PQP combined path |
| Platinum | 18,000 PQP (unchanged) | 45 PQF + 15,000 PQP combined path |
| 1K | 32,000 PQP (up from 28,000) | 60 PQF + 22,000 PQP combined path |
Silver, Gold, and Platinum keep the same PQP-only numbers they’ve had — they just lose the flight-count shortcut. Premier 1K takes the real hit: the PQP-only bar rises from 28,000 to 32,000, a 14% increase. For anyone who’d been qualifying 1K through the old 60-flights-plus-22,000-PQP combined path, the jump to 32,000 PQP is closer to 45% more points required.
You Still Need to Actually Fly United
Even though flights no longer count toward your PQP total, United is keeping a minimum flight requirement: members still need at least 4 flights on United or United Express in the qualification year to earn any Premier tier, regardless of how many PQP they’ve accumulated. Partner airline flights, including Star Alliance carriers like Lufthansa or ANA, don’t count toward that minimum, only United-operated and United Express flights do.
Credit Card Changes: Higher Caps, a One-Time Head Start
- The United Club Card and United Club Business Card annual PQP earning cap rises from 28,000 to 32,000, matching the new 1K threshold exactly, so a Club cardholder maxing out the cap on spending alone can still reach 1K without flying a single extra mile.
- Eligible co-branded United cardholders get a one-time PQP “head start” deposited at the start of 2027, equal to roughly 5% of their current tier’s new requirement, a small but free leg up toward 2028 status.
- To qualify for that head start, your card account needs to be open by December 31, 2026.
2027 Premier status itself is assessed on February 1, 2027, based on PQP earned during the 2026 qualification year under the current rules. It’s only the 2027 earning year (counting toward 2028 status) where the new PQP-only, higher-1K-threshold rules actually apply.
Why United Is Making This Change
United’s loyalty leadership framed the shift as a simplification effort, wanting, in the airline’s words, “one, consistent metric” that reflects both flight activity and overall engagement with the airline, rather than two parallel paths that could produce very different outcomes for similar levels of actual spending. In practice, it also pushes status earning further toward revenue (ticket price and credit card spend) and away from pure flight frequency, continuing a trend most major U.S. airlines have followed for years.
Bottom Line
If you qualify for Premier status purely on PQP already, little changes for you beyond 1K’s higher bar. If you’ve historically leaned on flight segments to offset lighter spending — especially to reach 1K — 2027 is meaningfully harder, and it’s worth running the math on credit card spend or Club Card membership to close the gap. The silver lining is the one-time head start: if you’re close to a tier and hold (or plan to open) an eligible United card, getting that account open before December 31, 2026 is a small, free step worth taking before the new rules apply.
