There’s only one hotel program you can convert Avios into: Marriott Bonvoy. It’s not a direct conversion either — it runs through Qatar Airways Privilege Club, which has the actual partnership with Marriott, and Avios move freely into a Qatar account because Qatar is part of the same Avios family as British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair. Here’s exactly how that works.
Why Marriott Is the Only Option
Avios isn’t one single program — it’s a shared currency across British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Finnair Plus, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. Points move freely between those four for free, with no fee and effectively no published cap. Qatar’s Privilege Club is the only one of the four with a direct, bidirectional points-conversion relationship with a hotel program, and that hotel program is Marriott. If you’re hoping to convert Avios into Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, or any other hotel currency directly, there’s no path — conversion into hotel points only flows one way for those programs, and only in the Avios direction, which we cover separately in our guide to converting hotel points to Avios.
The Conversion Rate
| Detail | Figure |
|---|---|
| Rate | 2 Avios = 1 Marriott Bonvoy point |
| Minimum conversion | 1,000 Avios |
| Increments | 500 Avios |
| Daily cap | 500,000 Avios |
That 2:1 rate is a real cost — converting 100,000 Avios gets you 50,000 Marriott points, and Avios on their own are typically worth more per point than Marriott points in most redemptions. This conversion makes the most sense when you’re specifically short on Marriott points for a stay you’ve already identified, not as a general-purpose way to move value between programs.
How to Actually Do It
- Make sure you have active accounts in both British Airways Executive Club (or Iberia Plus/Finnair Plus) and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, plus a Marriott Bonvoy account.
- If your Avios are sitting in a BA, Iberia, or Finnair account, move them into your Qatar Privilege Club account first — this step is free and usually near-instant.
- Link your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account to your Marriott Bonvoy account through Qatar’s partner conversion page.
- Select the number of Avios to convert (in increments of 500, minimum 1,000) and confirm.
- Allow up to 8 weeks for the converted Marriott points to show up in your Bonvoy account.
One routing detail worth knowing: Qatar Privilege Club only links directly to British Airways. If your Avios are in an Iberia or Finnair account, they need to move to BA first, then to Qatar — it’s not a direct one-hop transfer from Iberia or Finnair into Qatar.
Before You Convert
- The conversion can’t be cancelled or reversed once it’s submitted — only convert once you know exactly how many Marriott points you need.
- Linking and unlinking accounts is limited to twice per calendar year, so don’t treat the Qatar-Marriott link as something to toggle casually.
- Check whether a better redemption exists for your Avios first. Avios tend to deliver strong value on short-haul oneworld flights and Marriott’s own transfer-in partners (like Chase Ultimate Rewards) are usually a cheaper way to top up a Marriott balance than converting from Avios at 2:1.
The Bottom Line
Converting Avios to Marriott points is a narrow-use tool — useful if you’re sitting on a large Avios balance with no near-term flight redemption in mind and need to close a specific gap in a Marriott award, but not a rate worth using as a default way to move value between the two currencies. Check the other ways to top up Marriott points before defaulting to this route.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Marriott Bonvoy is currently the only hotel program with a direct conversion path from Avios, and it works through Qatar Airways Privilege Club rather than a direct Avios-to-Marriott link. 2 Avios convert to 1 Marriott Bonvoy point. The minimum conversion is 1,000 Avios, in increments of 500, with a daily cap of 500,000 Avios. Up to 8 weeks after you submit the conversion through your linked Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Marriott Bonvoy accounts. Not directly. Qatar Airways Privilege Club only links with British Airways Executive Club. Avios held in an Iberia or Finnair account need to move to BA first, then from BA into Qatar. Usually not as a default strategy. Avios tend to deliver strong value on oneworld flight redemptions, and the 2:1 conversion rate is a real cost. It makes the most sense when you need a specific, limited amount of Marriott points to complete an award you already have in mind. Can I convert Avios directly into any hotel program besides Marriott?
