The British Airways Companion Voucher (still widely called the “2-4-1” voucher) lets you bring a companion on a Reward Flight without spending any extra Avios on their seat – you only cover the taxes, fees and carrier charges for both of you. It comes from a British Airways American Express card, not from flying activity, and which card you hold changes what the voucher can actually do.
How You Earn It
You earn a Companion Voucher by spending £15,000 on a British Airways American Express card within a single card membership year – not a calendar year, and the threshold is the same £15,000 whether you hold the standard British Airways American Express Credit Card or the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card. You get one voucher per qualifying year regardless of how far past £15,000 you spend, and unused spend does not carry over into the next year.
How Redemption Actually Works
You book a normal Reward Flight for two people using your Avios as usual, then apply the Companion Voucher at checkout. The result: your companion’s seat costs no additional Avios – you both still pay the individual taxes, fees, and carrier charges for your own ticket, which on a long-haul route can still add up to a meaningful cash amount.
- Valid on British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus – vouchers earned from 1 September 2021 onward cover all three; it does not work on other Oneworld partners like American Airlines or Qatar Airways.
- The named companion cannot be changed after booking – if your travel plans change, the whole booking needs to be cancelled and rebooked rather than just swapping the second name.
- A maximum of two Companion Vouchers of the same type can be combined on a single booking.
- Reward Flight availability rules still apply in full – the voucher does not create extra seats, it only removes the Avios cost for the second one that’s already available.
Step by Step: How to Actually Book It
The voucher is applied during a normal Reward Flight search on ba.com, not entered as a separate code – miss one small step and BA will only show you the seats available to a regular Avios booking, not the ones your voucher unlocks.
- Log in to your British Airways Executive Club account and go to “Book a flight with Avios” rather than the standard cash-fare search.
- Enter your route, dates, and number of travelers as you normally would for a Reward Flight.
- On the search results screen, look for the “use a voucher” checkbox and tick it before reviewing seat availability. This step is easy to miss, and skipping it means you will only see the narrower set of seats open to standard Avios bookings – not the full range your Companion Voucher unlocks, which matters most in premium cabins on a Premium Plus voucher.
- Select your outbound (and return, if booking both together) flights from the availability shown.
- At checkout, confirm your companion’s full name exactly as it appears on their travel document – this cannot be changed after the booking is confirmed.
- Review the payment summary: you will be charged Avios for one traveler only, plus taxes, fees, and carrier charges for both passengers.
- Complete payment and confirm the booking. If eligible, the voucher is deducted from your account automatically – there is no separate voucher code to enter.
One booking-window quirk worth knowing: if you are booking close to British Airways’ 354-day advance-booking mark, outbound and return flights sometimes cannot be booked together online and may need to go through the British Airways contact centre as separate transactions – openjaw itineraries (flying into one city, out of another) also generally require calling rather than booking online.
Standard Card vs. Premium Plus Card
The two cards earn the voucher at the same spend level, but the voucher itself behaves very differently depending on which card produced it:

That cabin restriction is the real dividing line. The standard card’s voucher is useful mainly for economy leisure trips, while the Premium Plus voucher is what unlocks the benefit’s biggest value – two Club World or First seats for the price of the Avios for one.
The Solo Alternative
If you end up traveling alone, a Companion Voucher earned from 1 September 2021 onward does not have to go to waste – you can apply it to a solo Reward Flight instead and receive a 50% discount on the Avios price of your own ticket. It is a genuinely useful fallback if plans change and your original companion can no longer travel with you.
Where the Real Value Is
Because the voucher removes Avios cost rather than cash cost, its value scales with how many Avios the second seat would otherwise require – which makes premium cabins on long-haul routes the sweet spot. Two Club World return seats to a destination like New York or Dubai can represent somewhere in the range of 176,000-198,000 Avios saved on the companion’s ticket alone, which is why this is routinely described as one of the most valuable perks attached to any UK credit card. That value is only reachable with the Premium Plus card’s any-cabin voucher – the standard card’s economy-only voucher cannot touch it.
New: Redeeming Toward British Airways Holidays
As of 2026, there is a second way to use the voucher that doesn’t involve flights at all. Cardmembers who book a British Airways Holidays package using Avios as full or part payment can redeem their Companion Voucher for 25% of those Avios back – up to 200,000 Avios back per booking for Premium Plus cardmembers, or up to 50,000 Avios back per booking for standard cardmembers. This option is available on bookings made before 31 March 2027.
A Different Benefit With a Similar Name
Don’t confuse this with the “Gold Upgrade Voucher” – a separate benefit earned through Tier Points in The British Airways Club status program at 35,000 and 50,000 Tier Points. That one upgrades an existing paid ticket to a higher cabin; the Companion Voucher covered in this article comes from Amex card spend and applies to Reward Flight bookings. The two get mixed up constantly because both involve a second traveler and both are called “vouchers,” but they come from entirely different places and work in entirely different ways.
Practical Tips
- Reward Flight seats on popular routes open exactly 354 days before departure – if you’re chasing a specific date in a premium cabin, be ready to book right when that window opens rather than waiting.
- Decide who is traveling with you before you book. Since the companion’s name cannot be changed afterward, a wrong guess means cancelling and starting over.
- Consider flying out of Dublin or Madrid instead of a UK airport on long-haul premium redemptions – it avoids UK Air Passenger Duty, which meaningfully reduces the taxes and fees you and your companion each pay.
- Track your card year spend, not the calendar year – the £15,000 threshold resets on your card anniversary, not January 1.
