Delta’s annual gift card promotion is back. For a limited time, you can earn up to 4x SkyMiles when you purchase $400 or more in Delta gift cards. No registration required. To receive the bonus, you must spend $400 or more. The difference in how much elite and non-elite members earn depends on the current terms of the offer at the time of purchase.

Is It Any Good?

This offer is suitable for frequent Delta flyers. If you are planning to book Delta tickets with cash soon anyway, purchasing a card worth over $400 to receive a small SkyMiles bonus may be worthwhile, especially for elite Medallion members with 4X.

The average cost is ~1.34 cents per mile (actual cost according to AwardWallet). 1,600 miles for a $400 purchase for elite customers is worth about $21 — not bad, but not life-changing.

The advantage is that purchases are processed directly by Delta, which are usually coded as airline tickets, so you can add your premium card’s airline ticket multiplier (for example, up to 5X on some cards) to the SkyMiles bonus.

PurchaseStatusSkyMiles RateBonus MilesEst. Value @ 1.34¢

$1,000General3X3,000$40.20
$1,000Medallion4X4,000$53.60

So, if you’re using a credit card that gives you, say, 5X points on flights bought straight from Delta, a $400 ticket could get you an extra 2,000 points from your bank. The best reward comes from your card, not just from Delta’s SkyMiles.

The Fine Print That Matters

  • $400 minimum per purchase to earn the bonus; U.S. billing address; age 18+.
  • Gift cards are non-refundable and do not expire
  • Delta Gift Cards cannot pay the cash portion of an Award or Money + Miles ticket (you can’t use them to cover award taxes/fees).
  • Usable toward Delta-marketed flights (including Delta Connection/codeshares with a DL flight number) and Delta Vacations packages that include air.

Check the official Holiday Offer page for details and terms before purchasing.

Conclusion

This makes sense if you are a member of the Medallion program, will be paying with a card that offers airline ticket bonuses, and are willing to pay for your travel expenses in advance with a gift card.

If you are unsure about traveling with Delta in the near future, do not have a card that offers airline ticket rewards, or were hoping to use gift cards to cover taxes/fees for the reward, skip this offer.
